SPIRIT
A piece for voice, water, wheelbarrow and harmonium

by Þórunn Björnsdóttir

SPIRIT is performed by Heiða Árnadóttir and Tinna Þorsteinsdóttir pianist

Spirit I is based on an interview with the singer about her experiences with the spirit world. The work is a kind of installation where space itself plays a role, along with voice and visual material.

Spirit II is shaped by the singer’s spiritual and physical experiences. In this part of the work, I explore bodily memory, which—like a tree—can manifest and be shaped in various forms. The piece is an installation created in close collaboration with Heiða.

Spirit III – In this final part of the trilogy, the time has come for renewal. Here, as in the previous parts, the work is developed in close collaboration with the performers in an improvisational process. The harmonium engages with the voice, and together they move toward a kind of reset.
In the piece, delicate threads of repetition intertwine with the persistent search of the two voices for harmony.
"When it enters, the wooden floor responds, creaking — like an attempt to sound like a star in the bright blue sky. A pump and a hush, here and there, a trace of song, a trace of another time. Reset."
