"Varstu búin að vera að reyna að ná í mig"/“Were You Trying to Reach Me”
A solo opera for one voice and electronic sound by Guðmundur Stein Gunnarsson.
First Act: Laberico Narabida
Four voices speak to each other through one “speaker” which is a human voice. We hear voices. We hear slices of various voices through one. The voices are not the same person. Some are insecure and others have great self-confidence. Some have a high voice, with a fine operatic voice, while others mumble and speak everyday, faintly or in half-voices - almost meaningless hesitations. The 4 voices have allusions to various four characteristics as they appear in various old medical sciences as well as religious and/or mystical theories (the 4 bodily fluids, the elements, the first 4 chakras, astrology, the land spirits, 4 of Jung's archetypes, etc.). The human being is not alone, he lies in a dead end and cannot find his way home. Let me try, let me try.
Part Two: Scraping in a Ditch
Scratching in a Ditch is a kind of downward climb. The voice seeks harmony with itself. What was once simple now becomes complex. What was once complex now becomes simple. To negotiate is to seek harmony. In a process of negotiation between elements, some kind of harmony must be created. At least temporarily, for now.
Part Three: Adibaran Ocirebal
In the last part, the four elements seek balance. They appear as four characters who all take up residence in the singer. After fighting for attention, the characters try to achieve harmony and even fusion, but it is impossible for them. The work works with space - the placement of sounds from specific speakers and the voice, how both are called upon and work together. The electronic sounds are always an expansion and repetition of what the voice is doing but never a character in themselves - much like the person's thoughts
